CXMT Tops Global Memory Makers with 82% Operating Margin – DDR5 Shortage Fuels Surge

Release date:2026-09-16 Number of clicks:87

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) posted an 82% operating margin in Q2 2026 (April–June), surpassing SK Hynix (76%) and Samsung's semiconductor division (70%) to rank first among global memory chipmakers, according to analyst comparisons of recent financials.

The driver: general‑purpose DRAM, particularly DDR5. As Samsung and SK Hynix shift capacity toward HBM for AI servers, standard DDR5 supply has tightened, pushing spot prices sharply higher. While HBM contracts are typically annual and less sensitive to short‑term price swings, DDR5 trades on a spot basis – allowing CXMT to capture the full benefit of rising prices directly in its operating profit.

Capacity expansion is underway. CXMT plans to add 50,000–60,000 wafers per month in 2026, with equipment purchases expected to exceed $5 billion. The company is negotiating new orders with equipment suppliers and aims to finalize framework agreements by year‑end to capture market share during the upcycle.

Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) is expanding at a similar pace. Its Phase 3 fab has begun equipment installation, targeting production by year‑end and 50,000 wafers per month by 2027. Notably, domestic equipment accounts for over 50% of Phase 3 procurement – far above the 15–30% average for Chinese fabs.

Valuation gap: Samsung, SK Hynix, and Kioxia trade at single‑digit P/E ratios due to memory cyclicality, while CXMT commands a P/E near 20x – reflecting investor optimism about its growth trajectory.

NAND progress: YMTC has filed for an IPO and holds 14% of Q2 NAND shipments, ranking third globally alongside Kioxia (14%), Micron (13%), and SanDisk (13%). As Chinese memory makers ramp capacity, the global storage landscape could shift.

ICgoodFind Takeaway:
CXMT's margin leadership shows that DDR5 is where the profit is – while HBM dominates headlines, standard DRAM is delivering real earnings. With both CXMT and YMTC expanding, buyers should track DDR5 and NAND supply dynamics and pricing closely.
